Public Zone Manager projects: remarkable progress.

The action plans have been completed. Concrete actions in the four areas are gradually being implemented, with the first visible results!

The aim of the Public Zone Manager project, initiated by the Brussels Cleanliness Agency, is to improve cleanliness in four emblematic areas of Brussels (Place Flagey, Mont des Arts, Place Liedts and Gare du Midi) by improving the coordination of stakeholders and monitoring the implementation of actions.

Perhaps you've noticed it when you pass by? The numerous graffiti that covered the walls of the Mont des Arts have been removed! The Régie des Bâtiments has signed a contract with a private company for the removal of the tags and the application of an anti-graffiti product. The service provider will continue to visit on a weekly basis to remove new tags. This is a major step forward, and demonstrates the positive momentum being created by the people working on the site!

At Flagey, the diagnostic mission identified problems with the benches in the square. They are heavily used, and their surroundings are often dirty. The cleaning services sweep them up, but no thorough cleaning is carried out, with the result that dirt gradually becomes embedded in the flooring and the impression is one of constant dirtiness, even after the workmen have gone over. Following discussions in the Task Force, the municipality of Ixelles offered to clean the area around these benches, which are located on Regional roads, using pressurised water (cleaning of this square is normally the responsibility of Brussels-Propreté). In return, Bruxelles-Propreté offered to provide operational support to the municipality on Place Sainte-Croix by emptying the litter bins on this small, busy square, where the bins quickly reach saturation point. It's a fine example of how the local authority and the Region can work together, each going beyond their own remit to achieve the common goal of a cleaner neighbourhood!

The measure 3 in the clean.brussels strategy is to institutionalise this pilot project, which is still in progress. Further information here.
